Podcast: This I Believe by Casey Overton

[display_podcast]

This I believe that crisis does not make you show who you really are, but rather show qualities within yourself that you may not naturally possess. It has been proven that when a person is panicked, adrenaline kicks in. I believe that this, along with other things that are released with fear, is what causes people to sometimes act differently in a crisis.

When my mother was a teenager, she had gone out with some friends when she wasn’t supposed to. They had been cruising around a not-so-good neighborhood looking for the other group of girls they had planned to fight that night. Soon, another car pulled up near them. Both groups of girls prepared for an all-out brawl. the group of girls my mom was in all had agreed that they would stand and fight their opponent. The opposing group got out of their car and faced my mother and her friends. The groups exchanged smack – talk and harsh words for a while. Then, a girl in the other group pulled a knife.

All the girls in my mother’s group knew that this wasn’t a fight they could continue. No one else had brought weapons. It wasn’t supposed to be that kind of fight. Armed with a knife, the girl began to slash the tires of one of the two cars that got them there. The girl who had driven the car there jumped in with one other girl and drove away because the car was her mother’s.The rest of the girls went flying into the tiny remaining car. The car was filling up fast with people sitting on each other’s laps and touching the ceiling. Even though they had arrived in two cars, they would be leaving in only one…but not all of them. My mother was the last to get to the car, but there was nowhere for her to go. There was no room so they closed the door in her face while a girl holds a knife behind her.

My mother was furious at her friends and completely lost it. She screamed at her ex-friends and cried as the car pulled off knowing that at any moment she could be stabbed and killed by the angry girl standing feet behind her. Still in her panic, she then started screaming at the girl with the knife to just go ahead and kill her. My mom was seriously putting herself in jeopardy, but she was so panicked that she didn’t put all of his together.

My mother has never been the type of person to do something like this. I have never seen her actually panic in any situation no matter how critical. Even in The most stressful situations, she remains calm and thinks clearly. The has never been a time in my life where I have seen my mother crumble like she did that day in a crisis. This is why I could never believe that how a person acts in a crisis is how they really are.

Oh, and the girl with the knife…she ended up feeling sorry for my mom and giving her a ride home.
