One choice can destroy you. In the sequel to The Divergent Series, written by Veronica Roth, the Abnegation war that was presented in the last book is still ongoing in the second installment. Readers are immediately hit with one word, one name, that carries so much meaning: Will. As the story progresses, Tris’s Abnegation characteristics are more prominent as she wishes to sacrifice herself for others (while also feeling that she owes somebody something).
Being a more serious installment to the three-book trilogy, Insurgent shows a side of characters that readers have no problem with exploring. Many new characters are introduced to the story which adds to the pressure (and suspense) of the war against Erudite. As the continuation of the war progresses, alliances form and true colors are shown.
Roth again succeeds in creating a book so closely related to a video game or TV show that many may read her books in replacement of the two. She is also skilled at making readers question their previously made sides that were developed from the first installment. The theme of love is distinguished in this novel more so than the last novel; instead of hiding their feelings for each other, this time Tris and Four are together and fighting for justice…or fighting with one another.
The novel is suspicious, mysterious, and heart-breaking. Many lose their lives to fight for what they believe is right, however, some people lose who they are in the process. Who can and cannot be trusted? Who is for and against Erudite? Who really is who? These questions are all answered in the second book toThe Divergent Series.
