The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
The Republic Party has always prided itself on maintaining the certain basic liberties of every American citizen and the topic of guns laws is no different. Republicans believe that this country was founded by people who without a gun would have starved and that taking away the right to bear Arms is unconstitutional and would be unpatriotic.
The Democratic Party, contrary to popular belief, does not believing in taking away the right to bear Arms, but rather putting safer restrictions on it.
On many different occasions, we’ve seen people who had no reason to own a gun in the first place, own weapons and use them in a way that violated the most basic human right: the right to life.
For example, on December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed twenty-six people. On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed thirty-two people. So whose fault is it, the gun or the person?
Fully taking weapons out of the hands of Americans is a complete disregard of the Second Amendment, but adding protocols and certain limitations is necessary. Statistics from the smartgunslaws.org website state that guns kill roughly 3 people an hour, 85 people a day, and roughly 32,000 people a year as of 2010.
Although you will never be able to take guns out of the hands of mentally insane people, you can make it much harder for them to purchase, sell, and illegally use them.
The lives of Americans everywhere are at stake when anybody can own a firearm, especially people with a background of violence or mental problems. The key thing to remember also is that it is the government’s job to provide its citizens with a safe and positive environment.
Should guns be taken out of the hands of Americans completely? No, but either the government needs to start enforcing the laws in place, or their needs to be new protocols put in that place that will be followed.
Every death that comes as a result of unrestricted gun ownership and use is a death that could have been prevented.
