Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas is a great holiday film for everyone. Perry incorporates family values and morals into a hilarious comedy that is perfect for the Christmas season.
Madea accompanies her friend Eileen to Alabama, who wants to surprise her daughter Lacey for Christmas. Lacey is completely taken by surprise by her mother’s visit for two reasons: 1. Lacey is married to a man named Conner, who her mother believes is the farmhand and 2. Connor’s parents are coming for Christmas as well.
Lacey is left with a decision to make that will lead to Eileen’s disappointment, but will ultimately bring both Conner’s and Lacey’s family closer together for Christmas.
In addition to her mother’s surprise, Lacey is also faced with conflicts at her job, where the town’s parents are threatening her teaching position. The parents are upset that their annual Christmas Jubilee is being canceled, as many of them supply most of the goods sold and used at the jubilee.
One element of this film that I enjoyed was that it not only talked about Christmas and the regular commodities of the season, but it also had political elements. Lacey and Conner are an interracial couple that live in Alabama. In the south it is more common for couples to be the same race. I am really glad that this movie addresses something that could be considered taboo, and it makes what it is, which is completely normal.
This film contains great performances by Perry himself as Madea, Anna Maria Horsford as Eileen, Tika Sumpter as Lacey, and Eric Lively as Conner. Larry the Cable Guy and Kathy Najimy have great performances as well, as Conner’s parents Buddy and Kim.
I would recommend that anyone go see this film. It contains a message that is serious in today’s society, but also contains comedic elements that makes society look at the issues in a different light. Tyler Perry has made a hit with his newest addition to his “Madea” franchise.
