As a country, most places in America are closed to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. The disease did not stop the NFL from holding the annual draft. On Thursday, April 23, the National Football League held the first virtual draft in its history.
The 2020 draft is held in what is typically NFL Commissioner’s Roger Goodell’s man cave, in the basement of his New York home. Earlier Thursday, Goodell gave fans a tour of the new broadcasting room on his Twitter.
“Draft day 2020! Much different than we ever imagined, but its going to be fun,” Goodell said after concluding his tour.
In a time of social distancing and remaining six feet apart, many Americans can feel more distant than ever. Switching to a virtual draft gave the NFL the opportunity to bring people together without the risk of this disease spreading.
“But this year with all that’s going on in our society and around the globe, we need more experiences together,” Goodell said in an interview with Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts. “We need that ability to look forward and maybe have a distraction or diversion from all that we’re going through over the last couple of months, and this is a way to bring people together virtually.”
Starting of the night, former Louisiana State University quarterback, Joe Burrow was picked number one overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. Many expected Burrow to be number one overall, but for him, it was a victory that took fighting for.
“To jump up to number one overall is crazy to me,” the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner said in an interview with Suzy Kolber after being selected. “I wasn’t really good my junior year, its that simple. I worked really hard to get better. All my guys worked really really hard to get better, and we just gelled as a team this year to do exactly what we did.”

Tae Crowder was the 255th pick of the 2020 NFL draft, which is known as “Mr. Irrelevant.” The term was coined by Paul Salata and was officially used in the NFL in 1976.
“Its about championing the underdog in all of us,” Salata’s daughter, Melanie Fitch said before the 2020 selection.
This is not the New York Giants first go-around with Mr. Irrelevant. In 1983, John Tuggle was the last player to be drafted to the Giants. After finding out that he had a rare form of cancer and died during his first season with the franchise. In Super Bowl XXI (1987), Bill Parcells and the New York Giants won their first franchise victory in honor of Tuggle.
“He had those attributes you couldn’t see,” Parcells said during “The Irrelevant Giant” ESPN documentary. “He was an inspiration of sorts to me because you always wonder if you could do what he did, if you could endure and still have that ‘Let’s have a drink’ (mentality). You wonder. I don’t know the answer whether I could or not. I don’t know, but he inspired me.”
