    Students Balance Schedules

Being in high school brings more responsibilities to students as they take on more obligations. Many students start working while in high school, while balancing clubs or sports, and have a lot of homework. It can be complicated and stressful, but students must develop time-manangement skills to maintain skill in all areas of their lives.

Senior Vivian Lam works and is in a mix of Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment classes.

“I work at Hokkaido Japanese Steakhouse in the Crossings right behind Starbucks. I’ve been there for almost a year. It’ll be a year in April,” Lam said.

Lam is currently in two honors classes, three AP classes, and two dual enrollment classes.

“I’m FBLA president, I’m in state competition for DECA, and a couple of [other] school clubs, but FBLA and DECA are the ones that take up most of my time,” she said.

Lam has had to balance her time to manage her work, homework for advanced classes, and school clubs in the past year.

“I’ve always been the type to manage my time well. When I started working I had to find time to do homework. I go to work about two hours after we get out, so that’s the time I get stuff done,” Lam said.

Sophomore Alexis Korkos is just about to start working at Red Lobster.

“Orientation was February 24, and I go for training Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” Korkos said.

Korkos is in honors biology, history, English, and choir.

“I’m in show choir, the opera, dance, sign language club, French club, SOAR, art club, and PAAS vocal and theatre,” she said.

Just starting off with working, being in honors classes, and many extracurricular classes, Korkos must do some organizing to work everything out.

“I’m going to do intense scheduling and planning. Work is flexible and so is the play [Pirates of Penzance, premiering in May]. Once I can drive that will help too,” Korkos said.

A job gives students not only monetary resources, but independence. To maintain a balanced schedule requires patience and trial and error, and a clear idea of priorities.

“Know what is most important. If I know I need more time to get something done, I’ll call out of work an put my school work first,” Lam said.
