The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a beautiful mix of two mediums. Excellent prose comes together with incredibly detailed sketches and drawings to make something that is neither picture book nor graphic novel. Hugo Cabret is in a league of its own, and tying it down to a category or genre is doing the book a disservice. The story itself is an emotional mystery following the story of Hugo Cabret, a young pickpocket living alone in a clock tower. The plot keeps you engaged and tugs at the heart strings, but the visual accompaniment advances the story even better than the writing at times, which is a rare feat that should excite any book lover.
