The I Am Number Four series by Pittacus Lore
I Am Number Four tells the story of an alien teenager with superpowers, but despite the many unrealistic plot elements, there is a surprisingly relatable story on display. John is just a kid trying to fit in at his local high school while suppressing his differences, which is something many people can identify with. However, this is a series focused on action, and the “misunderstood teenager” theme quickly dissipates near the end of the first book. Once it does, the pace picks up, the real meat of the story begins, and a colorful cast of characters begins to emerge. The entire series is a smooth and fast read, and each book can be finished in one or two dedicated sittings.
