Pro/Con: Should Abortion Be Legal?

By Chandler Shirer

In recent weeks the media in the United States has been discussing issues regarding abortion.

In the past some of my family members have had difficulty conceiving children.  After years of trying to conceive, the couple opted to try Invitro Fertilization.  The procedure was completed and during that time the couple was shown pictures of their embryos and two cells, four cells, and so on.  They literally saw life begin before their very eyes.
My twin cousins are prime examples of when life begins.  At four weeks gestation a tiny heartbeat is detected.

Abortion is a method of murdering children that some people see as acceptable.  How can this be possible when it is obvious that life begins at conception?

People that chose abortion do not always chose a good place to have the procedure.  It can often be done in an unclean and unsafe environment with little or no follow up for the person having the procedure.  An abortion done incorrectly or without proper medical care can cause heath issues at that time and later for the mother.

The media and advocates for abortion should give each life a chance. The slogan “Chose Life” should be on the hearts and minds of everyone.  Abortion at any stage is killing a life.

There are many other options besides abortion.  Many childless couples wish for children to adopt.  I think that people should see the value of human life when it begins at conception.

Whether we like it or not abortion is a choice that any woman can make. Although it is a choice i feel like murder is murder no matter if its inside the womb or not. The only time it should be “acceptable” is if the fetus is harming the soon-to-be-mother in any way. Women should be reminded that there is in fact other choices and that there are some women out there who can’t produce children in the first place.

This is a very contoversial subject and I feel like it was covered well in this article. It is very straitforward and to the point. It would have been better if the other side was covered because there are certain situations where maybe abortion would be the best option. I like the use of the personal story in this article also.

I like that she started by striking an emotional chord. I see her point and I am siding with her, but I wish she would’ve added a little bit of the other side’s arguement. Of course it may not be right, but in order to completely qualify the arguement you must access the opposing views side. I like that she did give an alternative to having an abortion and overall i liked this article. I don’t think that the gov’t should pay for abortions because I feel like it would be a saving grace to those who do not practice safety.

This subject is very controversial. The church has always viewed abortion as something very evil, which has obstructed the opions of many people. I personally don’t disagree with abortion, I’m not saying I aprove of it, but within certain limitations abortion is acceptable. As long as the government doesn’t pay for people to get the procedure, then it should be legal. However, I belive there should be certain “parameters” that should be used, i.e. a set limit or some sort of extremely high tax, even the Ultra sound law recently passd in Virginia, so as to make sure that people realize what it is they are actually doing instead of abusing modern medicine due to a lack of responsibility or maturity.

This is a very controversial subject that I believe there will never be a cut and dry answer for. This writer has a very good view on this that should be taken into account by anybody concerned with this concept. She does a good pursuasive job of convincing the audience of her view. It is good to see that people want to get so involved on such an important subject of the modern world.

I completely agree with this writer’s thoughts but I also believe that in order for one to truly set their grounds on whether abortion should be legal or not, they have to be in an empregnated female’s shoes to understand what it is like to face the hardships of having a child. I do believe abortion is murder, but a woman who has an abortion should not automatically be treated the same way as a serial killer just because she has had one. It is easy to say a mother should take care of her child and not give him/her away, but actually doing it much more difficult than putting it in words.

Although I am Pro-Life, I believe that most people, including myself, who believe this have no idea, nor plan to ever have an idea of what it feels like to have to make that choice. It is not Pro-Life versus Pro-Abortion, it is Pro-Life versus Pro-Choice. Most people associate pregnancy as a miracle, as in the remarkable case mentioned in the article, and cannot wait to be parents. While adoption is another great option, there are not enough potential families for all of these children to have a home that people who believe in Pro-Life usually do. Under the most unconventional circumstances, as in with pregnancy as a result of rape, a person’s choice should be respected.

This article does a great job on introducing the topic. It is simple, touching, short and personal yet it conveys a simple message that is 100% true. Abortion is murder, and I personally believe that anyone who gets an abortion, or any doctor who performs one, should be treated the same way as a serial killer. The fact that this article changed someone’s opinion into the right one makes it amazing.

I liked the story about the twins, that was really cute and personal. This gives good insight about why not to be for abortion. I agree with the message in this article, I think that more people showed view this article because it is very persuasive.

I agree that abortion is an unfair solution for unintentional pregnancy that was not well thought out. Almost anyone who gets pregnant unintentionally sees the need to just end it, and carelessly sacrifices a potential life in the process. This article asserts everything wrong with abortion, which is basically a watered down substitute for murder.

The brevity and straightforwardness of this article adds to its message. It is a very simple opinion supported by very simple facts. I agree completely with the message of the article, as abortion is indeed murder. The personal connections were a great persuasive technique to use.

I enjoyed the personal connection made with the audience at the beginning of this article. The ideas you presented were great points. However, the flow of the ideas was off, and i think a committed focus to each point rather than stating it would have produced a more compelling response.

The story at the beginning of the article truly did add to this piece. While I do and will agree with abortion is killing children, I cannot agree with making it illegal. America is a country with freedom of choice, and therefore it should not be declared illegal. Many people who choose to have an abortion have a good reason to do so; perhaps having the child could potentially kill them, or it was concieved by something like rape. While this is not always the case, and there are careless people out there, making it completely illegal is not the right way to go about things. Encouraging people to look at other options would help, and pressing birth control for people who don’t desire children would help.

What an inspiring personal story at the beginning of this article as it was a great way to begin the article. To answer the question, I wholeheartedly believe that abortion should not be legal for it is murdering an innocent life that may do great things in life and impact the world. Abortion, in my opinion, is a sin being committed by a selfish individual that does not care about one’s life or does not think about the chances they did not give that child. My biggest argument on this topic is that there are contraceptives to getting pregnant for those that consider abortion once informed they are pregnant. (i.e, teenage girls) Furthermore, individuals that choose abortion do not deserve children and I believe that if abortion was made legal, the birth rate would decrease and there would be controversy amongst the human race.

I myself am Pro-Life. I had to do a speech recently on Abortions and thats when I found out that life does begin at conception. I dont belive anybody has the right to “choose” on whether or not somebody else should live or die. People who commit murder go to jail for years, but people that kill babies are free. DONT GET IT?!

My whole view about abortion has changed just from this article. I did not know a heartbeat can be dected at 4 weeks. I think at that stage one should resort to a different path other than abortion.
